Marangu Route, 5 days
The only route with huts instead of tents. A steady climb through rainforest and moorland, up and down the same trail.

Altitude, day by day
The climb
- Day 1
Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut
1,860 m → 2,700 m
Through the rainforest, often with colobus monkeys, to the A-frame huts at Mandara.
- Day 2
Mandara to Horombo Hut
2,700 m → 3,720 m
Out of the forest onto open moorland, with the first full views of Kibo and Mawenzi.
- Day 3
Horombo to Kibo Hut
3,720 m → 4,720 m
Across the lunar Saddle between the two peaks. Early dinner and bed before the summit night.
- Day 4
Summit, then down to Horombo
4,720 m → 5,895 m
Leave around midnight for Gilman's Point and Uhuru Peak at sunrise, then descend to Horombo.
- Day 5
Horombo to Marangu Gate
3,720 m → 1,860 m
Down through the forest to the gate, your certificate and the drive back to your hotel.
Five days gives little time to acclimatise. We strongly recommend adding a sixth day at Horombo.
