Named after the last camp below the summit.
Barafu means "ice" in Swahili. Barafu Camp, at 4,673 m, is where Kilimanjaro climbers rest before the summit night. We started in Moshi in 2014, taking climbers up that mountain, and grew into flying safaris and a private concierge. Today our office is in Arusha, the starting point for Tanzania's safaris.
How we work
Barafu is a Tanzanian-owned company with its own planners, guides and office in Arusha. Every journey is designed in-house: we choose each guide, camp, pilot and driver we work with, and stay with you on WhatsApp from the first message to the flight home.
Since 2014, guests have reviewed us 143 times on Tripadvisor, with a rating of 5.0. They return to the same themes: safety, warmth, and a crew that treats them like family.
Barafu works through three divisions. Barafu Flying Safaris designs fly-in safaris and private charters. Barafu Luxe is our private concierge. Kilimanjaro climbs, where we began, remain private to every party. Road safaris are run by our sister company Trailheads Safaris, and school and group travel by Wildcation Travels.

Founder and CEO
Chance Liganga
Chance Liganga founded Barafu in Moshi in 2014, leading climbers to the summit of Kilimanjaro. Under his direction it has grown into a group of travel companies based in Arusha.
He leads Barafu Tours and its three divisions, Barafu Flying Safaris, Barafu Luxe and private Kilimanjaro climbs, together with the sister companies Trailheads Safaris and Wildcation Travels. He also founded The Little Oasis Foundation, which is working to keep children in school around Moshi and Arusha, supported by a contribution from every Barafu journey.
He remains closely involved in the business and still reads every enquiry that reaches us.

$25 from every Barafu traveller goes to The Little Oasis Foundation, our own registered charity, to keep children in school around Moshi and Arusha. Its first year pays for uniforms, books, school meals and clean water at one partner school.
